How to Choose a Picnic Table
Start with how you'll use the table. Every picnic table on this page is a solid wood design from A&L Furniture, so you only need to decide four things: style, size, wood and finish.
- Traditional table with two benches: the classic picnic table look. The benches stand on their own, so you can pull them out, tuck them in or carry one somewhere else in the yard.
- Cross-leg table with two benches: the same loose benches, but with X-shaped legs for a more rustic, farmhouse look.
- Table with attached benches: one piece, with nothing extra to position. This is a practical pick for busy backyards, campgrounds and shared spaces where loose benches tend to wander off.
- Walk-in tables: these have walk-in space for easy bench access, so guests can sit down without swinging their legs over a bench. They come in octagon, square and 8' rectangular shapes.
If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair, look at the Pressure Treated Pine 8' Walk-In Table. It is listed as ADA compliant, with 14" walk-in access.
Picnic Table Sizes, Seating and Dimensions
The bench-style tables come in 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft and 8 ft lengths. The 4 ft table fits a family of four. Choose a longer table if your household is bigger or you have guests often. Where heights are listed, the tables stand 30" high and the benches sit 17" high, which is a comfortable dining height for adults. Each walk-in table seats up to 8 adults.
| Style | Wood | Size | Seating | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional Table w/2 Benches | Yellow Pine or Pressure Treated Pine | 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft, 8 ft | Loose benches | 118-235 lb (pressure treated) |
| Cross-leg Table w/2 Benches | Yellow Pine or Pressure Treated Pine | 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft, 8 ft | Loose benches | 118-235 lbs (Yellow Pine) |
| Table with Attached Benches | Yellow Pine or Pressure Treated Pine | 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft, 8 ft | Attached benches | 114-225 lb |
| 54" Octagon Walk-In Table | Pressure Treated Pine | 92"L x 92"D x 30"H | Up to 8 adults, 14" walk-in space | 210 lb |
| 8' Walk-In Table | Pressure Treated Pine | 94"L x 74"D x 30"H | Up to 8 adults, ADA compliant | 295 lb |
| 44" Square Walk-In Table | Pressure Treated Pine | 75"L x 75"D x 30"H | Up to 8 adults, walk-in benches | 170 lb |
To measure your space, mark the table's footprint on the ground with string or painter's tape. Then leave enough room on every side for people to get in and out and walk behind anyone who's seated. With loose benches, also leave room to slide them back. The walk-in tables list their full footprint, so you can mark out exactly how much space they take up. On a deck or patio, make sure the surface is level and solid enough to hold a heavy wood table.
Yellow Pine vs. Pressure Treated Pine
Pressure treated pine is treated for outdoor durability. That makes it the natural choice for a wood picnic table that stays outside all year on grass, gravel or a deck. It comes in nine stain finishes, from Unfinished to Linden Leaf. All of the walk-in tables are made of pressure treated pine.
Yellow Pine comes in the traditional, cross-leg and attached-bench styles, with 17 finish options. Those include the stains plus painted colors such as Black, Tractor Red, Caribbean Blue, Canary Yellow and White. Choose Yellow Pine when color is the priority. If the table will live outdoors, a painted or stained finish is a better choice than leaving it bare.
Finishes and Care
Choose a finish for its look and for how much upkeep you want. Painted finishes give you bold color. Stains such as Cedar, Redwood, Walnut and Gray let the wood grain show. The Unfinished option makes sense if you want to paint or stain the table yourself. That gives you the hands-on part of a DIY picnic table without having to build one.
- Brush off leaves and debris, and wipe up spills with mild soap and water.
- Set the table on level, well-drained ground or pavers so the legs don't sit in standing water.
- Recoat the stain or touch up the paint when the finish looks worn or water stops beading on the surface.
- If you buy unfinished pressure treated wood, let it dry thoroughly before you apply stain or sealer.
- Cover the table in harsh winter weather to help the finish last longer.
