How to Choose an Electric Patio Heater

Decide on coverage, power, mounting, and light first. Infrared heaters warm the people and surfaces in front of them rather than the surrounding air. So aim the heater at where people actually sit, and keep it out of the windiest spots when you can.

  • Coverage: measure the seating zone, not the whole yard. Our models cover anywhere from 30ft² around a single bistro table to 300ft² on a large patio. For a long or L-shaped space, two smaller heaters often spread warmth more evenly than one large unit.
  • Power: the G15R and the SBT-15S bistro table heater run on 110V and use a standard USA plug. Every other model is a 220-240V unit (the G30R is listed at 220V) and needs a hardwired connection.
  • Mounting: all models except the bistro table heater mount on a wall or ceiling, and most include a mounting kit. Torrid Series heaters mount 7-16ft high.
  • Light: E Series heaters use Zero Light carbon fiber elements, so they give off no visible glow. That makes them a good fit for covered dining areas where you want heat without extra light.
  • Control: every wall and ceiling model comes with a remote. The E18rw, E24rw, and E32rw also add WiFi control through a smartphone app.

110V Plug-In vs. 220-240V Hardwired Heaters

If you want an outdoor electric heater that runs on 110 volt power with no wiring work, you have two options: the G15R and the SBT-15S. Both are 1500W heaters with a standard USA plug. The G15R mounts on a wall or ceiling and heats up to 40ft². The bistro table heater warms about 30ft² around a table, and it has a heavy 26 lb base plate, a tilt-control automatic shutoff, and a 6ft cord.

The higher-output models (the Torrid Series, the G30R, and the whole E Series) need a hardwired connection on a 220-240V circuit, or 220V for the G30R. Plan on hiring a licensed electrician for the circuit and the connection. Give them the amperage on the product page (for example, 27.27A for the 6000W Torrid models) so the circuit is sized correctly.

Weather Ratings and Heating Elements

If you need a weatherproof outdoor electric heater, check the water rating on each listing. In an IP code, a higher second digit means stronger protection against water.

  • IP67 (Torrid Series): dust and water resistant. The highest rating here, and the best choice for exposed walls.
  • IPX5 (Genesis Series and bistro table heater): water resistant for outdoor use.
  • IPX4 (E Series): water resistant. These work best on covered patios, porches, and pergolas, where the heater is sheltered from direct rain.

The collection uses two element types. Torrid, Genesis, and bistro models have Golden Tube infrared elements, and on Torrid heaters those elements are replaceable. E Series heaters use carbon fiber elements with Zero Light operation, so there's no visible glow while they run.

Sizes, Coverage, and Placement

Heater lengths run from 25 inches (G15R) to 83.5 inches (E32rw), and weights run from 5 lbs to 31 lbs. Make sure your mounting surface can hold the model you pick. A ceiling mount works well over the center of a dining table. A wall mount works best when it faces a row of seating. Mount Torrid heaters 7-16ft high. For every other model, follow the clearances in the installation manual, and keep all models away from curtains, umbrellas, and other things that can burn.

Care and Maintenance

  • Turn the heater off and let it cool completely before you clean it.
  • Wipe the housing with a soft, dry cloth. Don't use abrasive cleaners, and don't spray water at the element.
  • Avoid touching the heating element, and check the brackets and wiring at the start of every season.
  • When a Torrid Golden Tube element wears out, you can replace it instead of buying a whole new heater.

Shipping, Returns, and Warranty

RADtec patio heaters usually ship from RADtec within 1–3 business days. After that, they take 3–5 business days in transit within the contiguous US, and you get tracking by email once the order ships. Orders of $200 or more ship free, and orders under $200 ship for $19.95 per order.

If a heater arrives damaged or defective, contact us within 7 days of delivery with photos. We'll then replace or repair it, or give you a full refund, at no cost to you.

Warranty coverage depends on the line: Torrid Series heaters carry a 2-year residential / 1-year commercial warranty, Genesis and bistro models carry 180-day residential / 90-day commercial, and the E Series carries 3-year residential / 2-year commercial. Frequently asked questions

How much area does an electric patio heater heat?
That depends on the model's wattage. In our range, coverage runs from 30ft² for the SBT-15S bistro table heater up to 300ft² for the 6000W Torrid T6000/18R2. Mid-size options include the T4000/8R at 120ft² and the E32R at 90ft². Measure the seating area you want to warm, then pick a heater whose listed coverage matches it.
Can I plug an electric patio heater into a regular outlet?
Only some models. The G15R and the SBT-15S bistro table heater are 1500W, 110V units with a standard USA plug. Every other heater here is a 220-240V model (the G30R is listed at 220V) that needs a hardwired connection. Hire a licensed electrician to install the circuit and make sure it meets local code.
Can electric patio heaters be left out in the rain?
It depends on the water rating. Torrid Series heaters are rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, which makes them the strongest choice for exposed spots. Genesis models and the bistro table heater are rated IPX5. E Series heaters are rated IPX4, so they're best under a roof, pergola, or porch, where they're sheltered from direct rain.
What is a Zero Light patio heater?
A Zero Light heater gives off infrared heat with no visible glow while it runs. Our E Series models, including the E24R, E32R, and the WiFi-controlled E18rw, E24rw, and E32rw, use carbon fiber elements for this. The Torrid, Genesis, and bistro models use Golden Tube elements instead. Choose Zero Light if you want warmth on a covered patio without extra light.
How much does it cost to run an electric patio heater?
Your running cost comes from three things: the heater's wattage, how many hours you run it, and your local electricity rate. To estimate it, convert the wattage to kilowatts, multiply by hours of use, then multiply by the rate on your utility bill. Lower-wattage models and using a lower heat setting both cut the cost.
How fast will my patio heater arrive?
RADtec patio heaters usually ship from RADtec within 1–3 business days. Delivery then takes 3–5 business days in transit within the contiguous US, and you get a tracking email once the order ships. Orders of $200 or more ship free, and orders under $200 ship for $19.95 per order. All delivery dates are estimates.
Can I return an electric patio heater?
Yes. You can return an item within 60 days from the delivery date if it's unused and in its original packaging. Email info@furnetta.com first to get a Return Authorization number. You pay return shipping both ways, the original shipping cost is deducted from your refund, and a 20% restocking fee applies. The policy lists opened or used products as non-refundable.
